MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY AND MEDIA EDUCATION AS CURRENT GLOBAL TRENDS
Abstract
The article is devoted to research of the problem of media and information literacy (MIL), which in current fast changing digital world is a necessary set of skills for navigating in complicated media environment, and for assessment of the information reliability and the appropriate usage of digital content by every person both in social and private life. It is presented the promotion of media and information literacy and media education as a global trend, officially introduced by the Global Digital Compact within The Pact for the Future, adopted at the United Nations Summit of the Future in 2024, and the implementation of the annual UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week program. The author also describes the concept of media and information literacy as a set of competencies needed for an active and informed participation in the media community life that consists of informational, media literacy and technological/digital literacy. It is stressed that media literacy and capability to a critical understanding of media messages is the final result of media education that is an educational process aimed on forming media culture in the society, on preparation of a personality for safe and effective interaction with the current mass media system including both traditional and new media taking into account the development information and communication technologies. The main task of media education is to prepare the new generation for the life under modern information circumstances, to receive and understand various information, to be aware of the consequences of its influence on the human psyche etc. The five principles and rules proposed by UNESCO that cover all types of mass media and other sources of information, regardless of the technologies used, and which are recommended to apply for Ukrainian educators in the process of establishment of the media and information literacy and media education, have been revealed in the article. There are disclosed the main provisions of the Concept for the Implementation of Media Education in Ukraine (2010) aimed at establishing an effective media education system in Ukraine as the foundation of the state’s humanitarian security, the consolidation of civil society, counteraction to external information aggression, and safe and effective interaction with modern media.
