ADULT CONVICTS EDUCATION IN THE UK PENITENTIARY INSTITUTIONS: ORGANIZATIONAL CONDITIONS

Abstract

The article substantiates the relevance of the development and improvement of the system of training adult prisoners for release. The organizational conditions for the education of adult prisoners in UK prisons are analyzed on the basis of a study of the scientific works of scientists and regulatory documents. A review of the scientific sources and the regulatory framework of the Ministry of Justice of England and Wales led to the conclusion that the education of persons deprived of their liberty is a holistic system in which the forms and methods of formal, non-formal and informal adult education subsystems are effectively integrated. The results of a scientific search suggest that the UK prison system has a wide range of educational services that meet individual needs. Each convict can use these services after drawing up an individual preparation plan for release, based on an assessment of the risks and needs of the convict. The organizational forms of the education of convicts in penitentiaries in England and Wales were identified and analyzed: academic qualifications; vocational training and employment; programs for correcting the behavior of offenders, religious education and upbringing, establishing social ties, and the «Through the Gate» resettlement program. We see the prospects for further research in substantiating the forms and methods of non-formal education that affect the process of resocialization of convicts. Positive ideas of the UK experience are highlighted, which require further study in order to implement them in the system of correction and resocialization of convicts in Ukraine.
