Abstract

The author has analyzed the role of public initiatives in the development of preschool education in Bukovina (end of 19th – beginning of 20th century). Attention is focused on the influence of public organizations and Western European pedagogical ideas on the development of preschool education in Bukovina during the researched period. It was found that the beginning of the Bukovyna preschool is connected with the opening of an examplery preschool at the Chernivtsi State Woman Teacher Seminary. It was revealed that the further development of preschool education took place thanks to public initiatives related, in particular, to the activities of the Catholic Benevolent Society, the Catholic monastic society «Mary's Family», the Society of Romanian Women of Bukovyna, and the Ukrainian women's societies «Myronositsy», «Orthodox Ruthenians», «Women's community». The conditions for the establishment and functioning of the first preschool institutions (kindergartens and shelters (graveyards) were studied, the examples of public initiative and responsibility were singled out. The representatives of the educational process were personified, the connection of preschool education with the national cultural and educational movement was substantiated. It was noted that women's public associations closely cooperated with relevant men's organizations in carrying out charity events and collecting funds for the maintenance of preschool institutions. The Society of Romanian Literature and Culture carried out the male patronage of the Society of Romanian Women of Bukovyna, and the Ukrainian women's societies were looked after by «Ruska Besida». There was justified that preschool educational institutions contributed to the formation of the tradition of preschool education in the multicultural environment of Bukovyna. The relevance of the experience of public initiatives in the field of preschool education in Bukovyna during the researched period for the development of modern Ukrainian preschools is emphasized.

Key words: public initiatives; preschool education; public association; feminist movement; lifelong education.
