HISTORICAL RETROSPECTIVE OF UKRAINIAN MIGRATION IN CANADA: EDUCATIONAL ASPECT

Abstract

Abstract. The article is devoted to the history of Ukrainian diaspora development in Canada. The historical retrospective analysis makes it possible to update the existing experience in the context of current events and to better understand the essence of the phenomenon under study – the integration of Ukrainian refugees into Canadian society by means of education. An effective means of integration is education. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to analyze the historical retrospective of Ukrainian migration to Canada in theontext of educational opportunities for adult migrants. The author used a complex of the following research methods: general scientific (analysis and synthesis, generalization and systematization), interdisciplinary statistical and system-structural), specific scientific (chronological, chronological-problematic, retrospective, cartographic).

For the historical retrospective analysis, the author took as a basis the classification of the stages of the formation and development of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, proposed by Canadian scientists. It was supplemented and adapted to the needs of the research. The war and military operations served as a key factor in distinguishing the waves of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. 5 waves were distinguished: the first pre-war wave (1891-1914); the second (after the First World War); the third (after World War II); the fourth (after the collapse of the Soviet Union until 2016); the fifth (after the start of a full-scale war unleashed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine).

While describing each wave, the author emphasized the formation of the Ukrainian community and characterized the cultural and educational aspects of its development. At each stage, the profile of a typical Ukrainian migrant was recreated: the level of education, knowledge of the host country language, availability of qualifications and professional experience, etc. This made it possible to trace the evolution of the Ukrainian migrants’ education level according to the stages of migration to Canada and the formation of the Ukrainian diaspora: from illiterate and poorly educated peasants in the first wave of migration to highly educated specialists of various professions with knowledge of the English language.

Key words: adults; Ukrainian migrants; Ukrainian diaspora; history of development; Canada; educational characteristics.
