THE ISSUES OF ANDROGOGY DEVELOPMENT IN THE HERITAGE OF ALEXANDER KAPP
Abstract
The article is devoted to theoretical analysis of the first andragogy concept developed by Alexander Kapp in the publication «Plato's teachings on education as pedagogy of the individual and as a state pedagogy or its practical philosophy» in 1833. It is considered that the author of the andragogy concept interpreted its meaning in the spirit of metaphysical idealism of Plato's idea of lifelong learning while many of his views differ from modern andragogy theories. The article pays special attention to the analysis of the content of scientific work which has a total volume of 474 pages and contains two main parts: teaching about education for individuals and state pedagogy. The first part consists of three sections: propaedeutics or education before birth; specific pedagogy; andragogy or adult education. According to the results of the analysis of these sections, it was proved that the structure of Alexander Kapp’s work based on the ontogenetic principle of human development. The author understands pedagogy and andragogy as equal areas, covering the education of children and adolescents (pedagogy) and adult education (andragogy). The second part of the work is devoted to the study and analysis of such characteristics of the state education as: the state education acts immediately, the state education through public life, the state education through the rules of life for all classes, the state education through its action on the state as a whole. There are a number of ideas in the paper that can already be considered as elements of the theoretical definition of adult education: self-knowledge as the first requirement to a person, the formation of human character through education, educating the male for the profession and in the profession, educating a male for his role as a father. It is established in the article that A. Kapp saw the andragogical field of the activity just in the education of the male, and not in the adult education in general. He completely excluded women from the education system. A. Kapp considered self-knowledge to be the basis of adult self-development. It has been proved that A. Kapp's andragogy has only a symbolic historical significance for the modern andragogy, but its positive ideas should be used for modernization of adult education in different countries of the world.
