CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE YELYSAVETGRAD SOCIETY OF LITERACY AND CRAFTS SPREADING IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Abstract
The article deals with the features of cultural and educational activities of the Society of Literacy and Crafts Spreading in Yelysavetgrad in the late 19th and early 20th century. The focus is on the history of the Society founding and the pedagogical search of the Ukrainian intellectuals of the time. Its influence on the forming and development of art and industrial education in the region has been determined. It is stressed that society has played a significant role in the spread of social thought, science, culture and art in the region. Its role as the first public organization that formed the artistic environment of the city – the «Art Section» is noted. The activity of the Art Section consisted in organization of the wide range of cultural events, among which the most significant was the arrangement of various exhibitions, which in turn contributed to the development of artistic taste among wide sections of the population both in the city and in the region on the whole.
There has been noted its role as the first public organization that formed the artistic environment of the city – the “Art Section”, the members of which were the leading figures of art across Ukraine. At the Art Section there were artistic courses where practical lessons were held and lectures on art were given. The Society of Literacy and crafts disseminated information in Yelysavetgrad and thus actively promoted the craftsmanship development in the region. In addition, the Arts and Crafts School was involved in the crafts organization, the providing materials and the sale of their products. The financial organization of the artel activity was important – loans and savings departments were created for them. The company's activities were aimed not only at the quantitative expansion of this field, but also on its qualitative changes, that were carried out by organizing the publishing house for handicraft production and the presentation of artisan products at various exhibitions.
