EUROPEAN HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN: GENDER ASPECT
Abstract
Abstract. The EU pays considerable attention to ensuring gender equality and the observance of women’s rights not only on the territory of EU Member States, but also outside their borders. Currently, this issue has become significantly actualized due to the war, insidiously launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. One of the priorities of the EU aid to Ukraine is to solve the gender issue and provide support to the gender-vulnerable population category – women and girls. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to highlight the European initiatives of humanitarian support for Ukrainian women who are fleeing from the war or are in the front-line territory or de-occupied areas of Ukraine, and are victims of gender and sexual violence. To obtain a complete picture, a complex of general scientific methods was used, which included a review of literature and sources, their analysis, systematization of the received information, generalization, and specific scientific methods, in particular, analysis of statistical data and structuring information. The author determines that humanitarian aid is provided in the following directions: directly to women (so-called «dignity kits», including contraceptives and basic sexual and reproductive health services), to humanitarian aid organizations (6.5 million euros for provision of psychological and social support, management of cases of gender-based violence, implementation of measures to reduce the risk of gender-based violence, etc.), implementation of projects to prevent sexual and gender-based violence and help the victims. It is emphasized that the component of humanitarian assistance is raising the level of awareness of Ukrainian women and girls about manifestations of gender and sexual violence and training specialists whose duty is to provide services to victims of violence. Continuation of such humanitarian support for Ukrainian women and girls will contribute to reducing the risk of gender-based violence in Ukraine.
